Hetzner Hetzner snapshots explained

Hetzner is a cloud provider from Germany with very competitive pricing for what they have to offer. Currently, they have servers in Germany, Finland, and the US.

What is a Hetzner snapshot?

A Hetzner snapshot is a crash-consistent, point-in-time capture of a cloud server which can be later used to spin up new servers.

Where are the snapshots stored?

Hetzner securely stores all the snapshots inside their own infrastructure.

Can I download a snapshot?

Unfortunately, at the moment of writing Hetzner did not allow users to download a snapshot to an external storage.

How are Hetzner snapshots billed?

Hetzner charges you €0.01 per GB per month for the snapshots you create. If a snapshot is not stored for one month, you are only charged for the time the snapshot exists.
One important thing to mention is that they charge you only for the actual disk space you use and not the whole disk. For example, if you have a cloud server with a disk of 40GB of which you use 15GB, they will charge you only for the 15GB.
